Josh Spaulding's ebook was the information overload du jour - I'd started reading Caroline Middlebrook's ebook on building a niche site and she recommended Josh's book for keyword selections.
Hours, a gassy baby, and many screens later I've been through Keyword Spy, alexa, google webmaster tools, siteanalytics - the list goes on - watched tons of internet film school video, a blog on film financing etc.
Why? Obsession - the desire to work from home to be able to help more with the kids - to own a business, create an independent revenue stream.
to date --
building niche sites to make money from adsense and links to affiliates
keyword research to identify niche markets where you can hope to get your page ranked on the first page of google results
affiliate programmes - making money referring business to someone else's product
and through it all, a signal to noise tension between the pure marketeers looking to gain attention primarily through trickery, and the content marketers - if your content is good then traffic will come.
I need to concentrate more on content, all the trickery hurts my head.
